Baranski started her career on stage at The Public Theatre in 1972's production of William Shakespeare's Hamlet. She made her Broadway debut in 1980's Hide and Seek. In 1984, she starred in Tom Stoppard's The Real Thing earning a Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Play. She acted in Broadway productions of Hurlyburly (1984), The House of Blue Leaves (1986), and Nick & Nora (1991). In 1989, she starred Neil Simon's farce Rumors for which she received her second Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Play. In 2002 she portrayed Mrs. Lovett in Stephen Sondheim's Sweeney Todd at the Kennedy Center. In 2008 she returned to Broadway in Boeing Boeing (2008).
She gained prominence in television for her role as Maryann Thorpe in the sitcom Cybill (1995–1998) winning the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. Baranski received acclaim for her performance as Diane Lockhart in the CBS legal drama series The Good Wife (2009–2016) and its spin-off series The Good Fight (2017–present). She also received Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series nominations for her performances as Dr. Nora Fairchild in Frasier and Dr. Beverly Hofstadter The Big Bang Theory. In 2022, she took a starring role as socialite Agnes van Rhijn in Julian Fellowes' HBO period drama The Gilded Age (2022-present).
Baranski has appeared in films such as Reversal of Fortune (1990), The Ref (1994), The Birdcage (1996), Bulworth (1998), Cruel Intentions (1999), How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000), Miss Sloane (2016), and A Bad Moms Christmas (2017).
